Three Films I Adore - Psychological Thriller & Horror
Share
I tend to gravitate towards this genre because it gets right into our fractured human psyche. The terror and unease of existing in this world can be a lonely & painful experience at times, but these films are a reminder we don't go through the dark alone.

The Menu
This one was refreshing to watch because it wasn’t too predictable. In an era where a lot of things feel the same it was pleasant watching a film that you weren't quite sure where it was going. I loved the deeper message of this film considering the social climate we are currently living in - it was a middle finger to the grotesque and pretentious side of high society and I loved every second of it. Last but not least I want to talk about the outfit Anya Taylor-Joy was wearing in the film for a second - the pairing of a silk night slip with a leather jacket and boots is a chef's kiss in my book. It’s a little vamp-esque and punk rock and it’s one of my favorite fashion pairings to date.
Lost Highway
The first film on the list had to be from one of my favorites, director David Lynch. I’m head over heels for his unique style and point of view, and the soundtracks to his films are always perfectly curated. If you want your mind to bend you can count on a Lynch film to do it. Lost Highway is one of those films that is as eerie sonically as it is visually. The film’s sound design is full of low drones and buzzing sounds just under the surface that unsettle me as I’m watching and puts me in the mind of the main character. The deeper it goes the more crazy the film makes you feel. And there’s a saxophone solo in the movie that sounds like it came straight from hell. David Lynch also has his own music album out called ‘Crazy Clown Time’ and it’s full of songs that sound like they came straight out of a nightmarish fever dream. I highly recommend giving it a listen if you dare.
Only Lovers Left Alive
I’m a hopeless romantic so naturally a film about vampire lovers would grab my attention right away. I love how this film is both bleak and poetic at the same time and how it captures the melancholic mental strain of living the day to day life of an artist in modern times perfectly. At times it seems this era isn’t deserving of artists because society doesn’t know how to value them any longer. The film’s characters, when not taking shots of blood, remind me that even though there are lots of dark days the beauty of life can still come through the cracks if you let it. Only Lovers Left Alive makes us take a long hard look in the mirror to try and seek the truth of life…whether we see our reflection or not.
